Hello all,

First time on the forum and I like what I have been reading so far. I hope to learn more from all of you. I apologize in advance if this was covered already, but I never heard of or knew of the IKI. I am sure this question has been done to death, but what are the differences between the IKI, IKMA, KMWW, etc? I assume the techniques are the same (maybe some little nuances) but is there anything specific?

Eric Welcome,

I am a new arrival as well but have done some research as well as taken Krav Maga with another organization. If you go to this link http://www.your-krav-maga-expert.com there is a ton of information on Moshe's site. Also look at the work of Itay Gil, http://www.protect-usa.com/itaygil.html, his history experience and current projects and you'll get a good sense of how the IKI was formed and it's workings.

In a nut shell Moshe who is a 4th dan in Krav Maga, was/is a student of Itay Gil who has extensive experience in very specialized units of the IDF as both an operator and instructor. If you've taken other flavors of Krav Maga you will see many similarities in the basic techniques. Where the IKI differs in the constantly evolving nature of simplifying and refining of techniques to ensure that what is practiced is safe, simple and effective.

I'm sure others here more experienced than I can give you a greater or more detailed response, but in my investigation of the IKI this is what I have found. I think you'll find, like I have, that there is some very knowledgeable folks here as well as very helpfull. Moshe Katz, in my email conversations is very helpfull and just an all around nice person. You'd be hard pressed to find a better instructor.

Good luck on your training. Dave

Hi Eric,

I thought I might post a few comments from various other things I have explained to folks who ask what you are asking:

"The evolution of Krav Maga will always take place based on the experiences of both the instructor and their students. Moshe and Itay work with people who either are or will be a part of the IDF (including Special Forces), the Israeli Prison Service, Security Guards, municipal Police, Border Patrol (including Tactical and Hostage Rescue Units). Moshe still trains regularly with Itay and is the only person traveling to teach each evolution in Krav Maga as used by these units/persons."

In regard to knife threats and attacks - " No matter how tired you are, or how sweaty your opponent may be - this one works. Keep in mind though, the goal is not to disarm, if you get the knife it's a bonus! Just do damage and get out of there! I will tell you this little secret though, most of the time you'll end up with the knife - shh don't tell anyone."

Regarding Gun Defenses and General IKI Philosophy - "Please notice, the use of gross motor skills. There is little to no use of refined skills which simply don't work most of the time when under a huge dump of adrenaline. It is important to note that these will work under extreme stress, while wearing body armor and carrying lots of equipment (and have been proven to by elite soldiers and tactical police units throughout Israel). Just more simple proof of the efficiency of this modern evolution of Krav Maga."

I hope this helps.

You have presented the best description about IKI I have read . Besides, Moshe Katz is all an instructor should be . Constant traveling , training , sharing knowledge and evolving. I did some research before joining IKI. Even though I met great people Its amazing to know that some of them will make you an instructor in a couple of days for some $$$ . That doesnt happen in IKI .

That is a very honest comment Maurice, Thank You for adding it. I am humbled by your compliment.

All Krav Maga organizations have their part, but IKI is certainly unique in many ways. Not just the gross motor skill based Krav Maga, but also in it's insistence upon integrity regarding promotions and honors. Moshe is indeed far removed from the McDojo concept. It has it's place if handeled properly, but rarely produces adequate instructors; although in defense of 3 and 5 day extended seminars, they are great for shortening the learning curve. Not to be too repetitive, but they just don't usually produce good instructors unless someone attends after 3-4 years training in KM and then they are just subjected to better ways to perform outdated material.

I have found this is not the case in IKI.

IKI seems to me to be a user-friendly organization which does its best to promote and educate people about Krav Maga and Israel. Having trained with IKMF and KMWW in the past you only have to look at the huge cost to complete an instructor course to run a Krav Maga franchise. As a fledgling school I find it very convenient and affordable to be affiliated with IKI, the syllabus presented from beginner to black belt is well structured and I receive updates regularly and communication with the Israeli headquarters is easy.

Agreed! Moshe is the most approachable head of organization I have ever experienced. With 10 years in KM and other Israeli based systems, I have never been part of anything in which such a high level of Krav Maga is taught by someone I can email and nearly without fail recieve an answer within 24 hours; even when he was touring Moshe replied at his first possible chance!

IKI is for real period. This is not an organization where you buy an instructor certificate. Moshe Katz takes the time to send us techniques almost every day . We can ask about the techniques and discuss them . He will always answer .

Moshe has always reponded to my questions very fast and is very approachable. No beaurocracy or politics, just good material and training.
